R.V. Paul Chan, MD, MBA (2005 Ronald G. Michels Fellowship Foundation Award Winner) received the Crystal Apple Award from the American Society of Retina Specialists and the Jenny Pomeroy Award for Excellence in Vision and Public Health . Yoshihiro Yonekawa, MD (2015 Michels Foundation Award Winner) is currently co-chair of the Early Career Section for ASRS with Mrinali Gupta (2014 Michels Foundation Award Winner), and chair of the program committee for Vit Buckle Society working with president Charlie Wykoff (2010 Michels Foundation Award Winner). He's editor in chief of RETINA Roundup, the blog for the journal RETINA, working alongside Avni Finn (2017 Michels Foundation Award Winner), Matt Starr (2020 Michels Foundation Award Winner) and David Xu. He's authored ~40 peer reviewed publications so far in 2021, identifying new findings in genetic syndromes, publishing on various RD outcomes for the PRO study, examining geographic access disparities, and publishing on endophthalmitis and trauma in journals such as RETINA, JAMA Ophthalmology, and Ophthalmology. He's looking forward to speaking at AAO Subspecialty Day and being on the pediatric retina panel along with Paul Chan (2005 Michels Foundation Award Winner), Cagri Besirli (2011 Michels Foundation Award Winner) and others. Mrinali Patel Gupta, MD now at Retina Associates of Orange County, in collaboration with colleagues from Weill Cornell Medical College (including former Michels award winners Szilard Kiss and RV Paul Chan) and from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, recently published a paper entitled "Ocular outcomes after treatment of cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis using adoptive immunotherapy with CMV-specific cytotoxic T-lymphocytes" in Ophthalmology Retina. The findings of this study suggest a potential role for CMV-specific T-cell therapy for CMV retinitis unresponsive to standard-of-care antiviral treatment. More broadly, this is the largest report to date of systemic cell-based adoptive immunotherapy for ocular disease. Further studies are ongoing. Posted:2021-06-14
